Fashion In Film

Best Dresses in the Movies
My Dad recently asked me to compile a list of the ten best movie dresses for him. He's writing a novel about a movie reviewer, long story. There are more than ten here but I included the ones that I love and he did not. These are in no particular order, and we will start, as we should, with Audrey Hepburn.

This is from the movie Sabrina. It's a much-copied prom dress nowadays, and it stands the test of time.

I didn't go to the prom in the nineties, but for those of you who did, you'll remember this dress. Kate Winslet's ball gown in Titanic became one of the most copied film costumes of all time. It's not a very flattering silhouette on most people, but Kate looks amazing. Of course.

Here we have the Vivienne Westwood wedding dress from the Sex and the City movie. At the actual wedding, Carrie wears a bird in her hair. I chose this picture instead.

This is the moment America fell in love with Julia Roberts. This gorgeous red dress cemented her status as one of the most beautiful women in the world.

Princess Grace Kelly in Rear Window. Stunning.

The wedding dress from the Princess Bride is one of my favorite movie wedding dresses. If I went to a Renaissance festival, this is what I would wear.

Nicole Kidman's red corset dress in Moulin Rouge. Remember when Nic here was stunningly gorgeous, Botox free, and singing love songs?

We all know this dress, but who can name the movie? The Seven Year Itch. One of my favorite movies ever and Marilyn Monroe is hilarious in it. If you've ever worn a halter dress, you have Marilyn to thank.

Scarlet O'Hara famously made a dress out of the curtains in Gone With the Wind. The dress is now in the Smithsonian.

Demi Moore's Tadashi dress in Indecent Proposal. Beautiful cutouts on a stunning woman.

I know it's not a dress, but this is one of the most famous costumes in movie history. Diane Keaton played Annie Hall and wore clothes from her own closet, men's pants and a tie. Sexy and original.

The green dress in Atonement was recently voted the best movie dress of all time, and I have to agree. They took a silhouette from that period in a stunning color that isn't from that period and put it on a woman with the perfect body for it. I can't stand Keira Knightley but in this dress, in this movie, I understood her appeal.

Baby's dress in Dirty Dancing. My guilty pleasure movie so I put it in there.

The original little black dress: Audrey Hepburn's Givenchy gown in Breakfast at Tiffany's. A dress that is also in the Smithsonian.

When Kate Winslet steps out of her apartment building in this yellow silk dress in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, she takes your breath away. This is also a dress that was knocked-off rampantly. Of course, it would make anyone who wasn't a size 00 look like a heffer but whatever.

These are my favorite gowns, hope they inspired you! Au revoir!

Girls in Their Summer Clothes

The Summer Heels Post
(As Promised!)

It took me long enough but I finally finished this post. These are my summer heels and I have also added a picture of me wearing the blue shorts from Ann Taylor Loft. Pictured above are a blue version of the nude Bongo wedges I wear all the time. I love the color of those and I wear them quite a bit.

These are my absolute favorite summer heels. I got them from Target last year. They go perfectly with summery dresses because they're a counterpoint to all that flowy fabric. I also love them with skinny jeans. If you buy one pair of heels make them a brown gladiator style. You won't be disappointed.

These are cream colored espadrilles, also from Target. I love these shoes but hardly wear them because I have twisted my ankle TWICE while wearing them. I wear them if I'm not gonna have to be standing or walking a lot. I'm maybe a little crazy...

These are great when you want a closed-toe heel in the summer. They're from Charlotte Russe. That cute buckle makes them timeless.

Gotta admit, I don't much like these black wedges from Charlotte Russe but they're my only black summer heels. I'm on a search for some new ones at the moment.

Here is the complete outfit with the cute blue shorts. I went shopping in this. I loved wearing it and it's insanely comfortable. Thanks go to Justin Williams for taking the pic!

Hope I gave you some ideas of what heels you might wear in the summer! I'm going to be doing more posts of complete outfits that I wore because I have so much fun doing them. Au revoir!

I Shop Alot

Recent Purchases: Clothes and Makeup Haul

Here are some of my newly bought items. I fell in love with each and I want to share them!
First up is a beautiful dress from Target, it was about $20.

That blue is one of my favorite colors to wear. The photograph doesn't fully show the detail, but there is a ruffle diagonally across the chest and a belted waist. I always gravitate toward belted waists because my waist is tiny. It's a really nice sundress that can be easily dressed up.

Yes, that is a romper. I know, I know, I mocked them mercilessly for months, but I tried this one on and fell in love. It was at Rue21 for $15 and I loved the pattern, so I decided to try it on. It's actually surprisingly flattering. The top is very structured, which is important for me because I have a larger chest, and it's not too short. I have black sandals (see my summer sandals post) that will look fantastic with it.
These shorts are what I'm most excited about. They were a STEAL at $20 considering that they're from Ann Taylor Loft. They're navy blue and high-waisted, with small front pleats that are cute and flattering. It's more like a skirt than shorts, and I'll pair it with a tucked-in t-shirt to show off the high belted waist.
Now for makeup! I am a huge makeup geek and I watch makeup tutorials on youtube constantly. These palettes are from Wet 'n Wild, they're called Ultimate Expressions, and they were 50% off so I only paid $2.50 for each! That's 16 different shadows for five dollars! And they're really good shadows. They're highly pigmented and have a great sheen without having any actual glitter. I cannot stand chunky glitter in shadows. The palette on the left is called Sand Castle and the right is called Fantasy Island. There are other palettes and I would recommend all of them! I got mine at CVS.
NAIL POLISH! Starting from top left and going clockwise, Wet 'n Wild nail polish in Blazed is the one I'm wearing right now, as you can see in the second picture. I like the color because it's actually a coral color. Usually you buy "coral" nail polish and it's straight orange. The next is Milani polish in Pink Hottie, which I am totally obsessed with. It's the perfect hot pink. Next is from Sally Hansen (I LOVE the Xtreme Wear Line) in Mellow Yellow. It's just a great sunny yellow. I was very disappointed in the tiny green one from Sally Girl. It doesn't show up mint green as I had hoped, instead it's sort of a glow in the dark yellow green color. Not cute. And finally we have Orly nail polish in Charged Up. Kind of a weird name. It's a nice purple but I prefer my OPI purple. This one is not very dark, but I got it for that reason. Better for spring.

This is my recent haul! I hope you enjoyed it, I promise that my next post will be on my summer heels! Au revoir!

Nightmare on Elm Street Fashion: You're Kidding Me, Right?

Clearly, You've Never Seen a High School
Student

So I went to see A Nightmare on Elm Street last night. I actually liked the movie; the plot was good and even though they replaced Freddy, I liked Jackie Earl Haley in the role. He plays a pedophile well. There were a lot of good scores and some great effects shots.
BUT. The clothes. I've been to high school, no one dresses like this. Also, people in high school aren't twenty four, but that's a different story.
Yes of course, I often attend my friend's funerals with a head full of extensions and a ridiculously expensive coat. And every boy in high school looks like Adam Lambert lite. There is so much hair product and bronzer and eyeshadow on that guy. He dies, of course, but not soon enough. Our heroine, Nancy, who seems to not have a lot of money, is wearing a gorgeous trendy trenchcoat and staring at extensions girl, possibly wondering how much cheap fake hair a person can put on her head. Think about this: you're living in a small town, you don't have much money, can you afford these clothes? NO.

In this scene, extensions girl (also known as Chris) is dreaming in the middle of class. Apparently before school she had her hair professionally done. That's a normal enough shirt but she's wearing a $150 pair of white Joe's jeans with it, along with some gold gladiator sandals. I saw that outfit and just sighed. And I'll say again, this girl is too old to be in high school.
Yes, when I sleep I always wear a bra and a face full of makeup, including false eyelashes.
Here is the sensitive male lead. He wears a lot of black, including this extensively detailed black button up with EPAULETS. To set him apart from the stupid jocks in the school. Who would also wear this shirt. At least he looks like he could be eighteen.

Now, there is one outfit I can't find and I'm so sad about it. As the movie goes along we watch the heroine Nancy and her boyfriend Quentin, above, and what they do in one night. Nancy obviously is wearing only one outfit. To fight and try to kill Freddy Krueger, Nancy wears skinny distressed black jeans and a drapey WHITE top, which both look crazy expensive and designer. But the kicker here is her shoes. She wears four inch high heeled gray boots throughout the entire second half of the movie. She runs, fights, gets hurt and ends up in the hospital, all while wearing high heels. ARE YOU KIDDING? NO. Also, who wears expensive boots to an 8 hour day of high school? I was at a loss.

So despite the ridiculous way these characters are clothed, I liked this movie. But as a fashion blogger, the clothes took me out of the story a bit. As did the terrible dialogue.

Leopard Skin Pillbox Hat

MOODBOARD
I woke up in a very 60s, pop-art, Edie Sedgwick and the Velvet Underground mood. Here is a collage of images that show my interpretation of that style. Some are of me or my clothes and accessories, and some are photos I got online, most from the 60s but one of Miss Gaga.

The Nights Are Getting Warmer It Won't Be Long

SHOES
I'm doing a series on summer clothes and this is the first. I concentrated on flat summer sandals and my favorite flip flops. Sandals that aren't flip flops are an important thing to have in your closet. They will make an every day outfit that much better. Here is my collection! I'm starting with the most recently purchased sandals, this gorgeous pair I got for $15 at Target.

I prefer neutral flat sandals but the turquoise in these is GORGEOUS. I have several brown dresses and a few pairs of shorts that I'll pair these with.

This is a beloved and obviously much-worn pair. The labels are completely worn off but they might have come from Payless? Can't remember. If you're gonna buy one flat sandal I recommend getting a metallic. They look great with everything and will class up most outfits.

Super cute sandals I've worn only once. They need to be broken in but after that they'll be worn a lot. I like the shape of these, the wide band is cute on the foot.

I love these brown sandals. They're beaded and the straps are braided. They're really cute with dresses.

Love love LOVE my black sandals. They're actually jelly sandals, which I balked at at first, but they're so comfortable and cute. I'm excited to wear them with my new romper, there will be a post on that and other shorts soon.

These are my current favorite flip-flops. Mostly Haviana's and Gap. As you can tell, I like neutrals, but those bright blue Gap flip flops really brighten up outfits. Haviana's are THE BEST flip flops you can buy. They're made of recycled tires and they're sooooo comfortable. The patterned shoe in the middle was a gift from my Aunt Bia. She's Brazilian and Havi's are a Brazilian brand. I wear them constantly!

My next post is gonna be on summer heels! Au revoir!
